Events - Fossil Weekend
Lyme Regis has been famous for fossils since Mary Anning and her brother Joseph found the first Ichthyosaur here in 1811. Mary went on to discover the first plesiosaur and the first British pterosaur at Lyme, as well as a wealth of other fossils including sharks, ammonites and more ichthyosaurs. These discoveries have attracted geologists since Victorian times, and continue to do so today.
The cliffs around Lyme Regis are composed of limestone and soft shales that were deposited on the floor of a shallow sea that covered the whole area around 200 million years ago. These cliffs are constantly eroding and continue to yeild a wealth of fossil materials. New species continue to be discovered, including large vertebrates. All this contributed to making the section of coast around Lyme Regis Britians first World Heritage Site. Your fossil guides, Paddy and Chris have extensive experience in fossil collecting on this coastline, and have both been involved in television programmes, including work with David Attenborough.
Our Fossil Weekends will begin with a comprehensive talk and slide show, with an opportunity to see up close real specimens of all the well-known local fossils, including not only the common ammonites and shells, but also articulated sections of ichthyosaurs and other vertebrates' remains.
The fossil walk the next day will be between Lyme Regis and Black Ven and will be about three and a half hours in duration. This will allow for stops to look at features of the local cliffs and also examples of common fossils as they are found on the beach. Finally guests will have an opportunity while a way an hour or two by visiting the Philpot Museum, with its geology gallery and other interesting exhibits of local history.
Our next Royal Lion Hotel Fossil Weekends will be held on 24th-26th February and 2nd-4th November 2012 - click here to request a reservation online.
